Kaan, Tuule / Sooäär, Jaak - Ohtu Ilu - Beauty of the Evening CD

The kannel(zither or psaltery in English)is one of the oldest and most prominent Estonian folk instruments which is also known in the other Baltic countries, in Finland and elsewhere. Combining the kannel with the guitar is something that has not been done very often, if ever. Tuule Kann has been one of the most active folk musicians in Estonia during last twenty years and the same can be said about Jaak Sooäär in jazz field. Since summer 2006 Tuule and Jaak have performed regularly duo concerts all over Estonia. Pairs of opposites – jazz and folk, international and local, fixed compositions and oral traditions – meet on equal terms in duo's music inspired mainly by the sound and technical possibilities of kannel and electric guitar, two string instruments with so different history but relatively similar sound. The voice of Tuule Kann is adding an extra dimension to this meeting of different styles and esthetics. The result is mainly peaceful, minimalistic atmosphere which could be called “quite quiet music”.

Klakki - I Kjol ur Vatni (In a gown of Water) CD

Unusual music from unexpected places. The Copenhagen-based Klakki have set the words of Icelandic poets to their unique orginal music, using traces of the Nordic musical traditions, but only as a medium used to create a unique popular, jazz-inflected art music. The obvious focus is the wonderful Icelandic vocalist Nina Björk Elíasson, who also wrote much of the music. Hasse Poulsen supplies supple acoustic guitar, Martin Bregnhøi the sometimes quirky percussion and Olafur Gudnason the dramatic bottom of acoustic bass. Guests Iver Kleive (pipe organ) and Thomas Sandberg (percussion and vibraphone) add diverstity and color to the sound.

ORCA’s debut album ‘Livandi oyða’ (CD/DVD) was recorded at Niels L. Thomsen’s farm Innan Glyvur, Faroe Islands, by ORCA founder Jens L. Thomsen. All instruments heard on the record were built during Christmas 2005 by Jens, family and friends using scrap material and power tools found at the farm. After finishing building the instruments Jens started composing and recording together with Jógvan Andreas á Brúnni, Magni Højgaard, Bogi á Lakjuni, and Kári Sverisson for only five days, which ended with a concert in the farm’s machine hall on New Year’s Eve 2005.

As well as the original live material, the record features remixes by The Third Eye Foundation, Bookworms, Oktopus/Deadverse, and Com-Data. Included with the release is a DVD with two music videos, two live videos, from the concert New Year’s Eve 2005 and a short documentary explaining how the instruments were made.

Mpiri - Upp Gledist CD

Mpiri has had several concerts in the Faroese church in Copenhagen (Samuelskirken), in the Faroese meeting hall Føroyahúsið and in other central places for the Faroese environment in Denmark. One of the choir’s largest undertakings so far has been to organize the annual North Atlantic Choir Festival in ’99 for North Atlantic minorities in Denmark. At the festival Mpiri performed the first composition by the young Faroese composer Tróndur Bogason, who has been connected to the choir since its beginning both as composer and singer and who to this date has made several compositions especially for Mpiri.
