In this CD Nils Anders Påve yoiks the way he has heard elder people yoik in the Soppero and Karesuando area in Northern Sweden. In his chants he performs yoik lyrics describing and remembering people, incidents, landscapes and reindeers.

He is born in 1938 and lives in Övre Soppero in Northern Sweden. Since his childhood, he has migrated with his reindeer in Saarivuoma Sami village, which has its grazing lands in Norway and Sweden.

”In the olden days we did not hear any other music, only the yoik. And I’ve always felt the urge to yoik.” So tells Nils Anders Påve who has been working as a reindeer herder back in the times when people used to yoik during work and migration. Yoiking was a way of communicating, your voice informed your friends of your position.
”Cokcu in an old yoik. When I began to understand, it was already old. Cokcu is a conspicuous mountain in our grazing land, high with plain lands surrounding it, you will always see it. It shines like a star. Therefore it is yoiked.”
”And I have yoiked in a sledge. Even the draught reindeer trots better when it hears a yoik. Best of all I like to yoik the old reindeer cows.”
”These are the yoiks of my homeland”, tells Nils Anders.
