Davvi Jienat / Northern voices is a double CD where 27 different artists (yoik-singers) from Samiland perform traditional and classical yoik a-capella, from the Southern areas in the central part of Scandinavia to the Kola peninsula in east. Many of the artists have never before performed in public, and several of the yoiks were presented on stage for the first time. Please take this opportunity to experience and learn about the width and the differences of Sami yoik languages, among them the South Sami vuelie, the Lule Sami vuolle, the North Sami luohti and the Eastern Sami leudd.
The yoiks on this CD are recorded live from concert events between 2000 and 2002 by Ájtte Sami Museum in Jokkmokk, Sweden, and the Sami Theatre in Kiruna. The concerts were produced and hosted by Maj-Lis Skaltje. There were two different groups touring, one named Juoigama Suopmanat / Yoik languages and the other Boazoolbmuid luodit / Yoiks of the Reindeer people. The youngest yoiker was at that time 9, and the oldest one 84 years old.
