Nine years after their first release, the Saami band «Orbina» presents its second album The new CD, simply called «Orbina II» contains ten tracks, and once again they are all deeply rooted in the traditional Saami way of singing, the «yoik».
All things change, and in the musical scene things change fast, and the group Orbina has changed. Highly acclaimed Saami guitar virtuoso Roger Ludvigsen has left the band, his place taken by peer Klemet Anders Buljo - a man and name associated with numerous bands, records, performances and soundtracks in Sápmi. Still remaining in the band, though - is Bjørn Ole Rasch, keyboard wizard and backing musician on countless albums, - recently most recognized for his work with the Norwegian folk trio “Bukkene Bruse”. Also singer Leif Isak Nilut remains in the band - although his female counterpart Inga Juuso has a far wider vocal presence on this second album than on the first. To complete the records complex sound structures, the band has collaborated with bass player Svein Schultz, drummer Rune Arnesen and flute virtuoso Hans Fredrik Jakobsen - who also contributes on the bagpipe. The outcome might best be described as a large canvas of highly contemporary Saami folk music with colorful strokes of the digital music making of our new millennium. Surely the up-tempo thundertrack “Ale spiehkas” will hit the disco turntables in Sápmi on Saturdays - maybe to be followed by the subtle-yet-symphonic folk ballad “Gáisi” on the morning after. Wether or not the band will have a hit like the title track “Orbina” on their first album remains to be seen. (The track stayed amongst the top ten in the Norwegian radio show “Ti i skuddet” for 12 consecutive weeks - four of them as # 1.)
