Tórshavn Male Voice Choir was founded in 1986 and had its first public performance in the capital Tórshavn in 1987. It was conducted by Bjarni Restorff. The audience was pleased to hear a male voice choir again in the islands. A choir which was to become an active player in the musical environment in the Faroe Islands. Determined and purposeful practice has enabled the conductor Bjarni Restorff and other visiting conductors such as Erik Kamp Hansen and Sunleif Rasmussen to lift the level of the choir up among the very best. Results at singing contests in Wales in 1994, Austria in 2000 and Cornwall in England in 2003 are proof of this. The choir has also been on highly praised tours in other countries which have strengthened the relationships and friendships between the singers. A chief aim of the choir is to perform originally Faroese pieces for choir. But also pieces from other countries are in the programme, performed in its native tongue. The choir has performed in 13 different languages. Another aim has been to perform in small and remote villages in the Faroe Islands, and not just in the capital or abroad. The choir has continually been active since 1986 and has assisted in making male choir singing an integral part in the cultural life in the Faroe Islands.
